Cast iron scales. The body of the scales is painted red and features a gold and black transfer-printed inscription, 'PATENT No 158751 AVERY AUTOPRECISION TO WEIGH. 1.LB', and a dial on both front and back. The dials each have a needle and feature a scale in ounces up to one pound with equivalent postal letter rates.
A pan would have rested on the four metal struts on the top of the body, but is now missing.
A cast iron foot around the base of the scales is painted black.
The scales may have been used to weigh letters at Sainsbury's Head Office.
