Salt and Pepper is Here

Salt and Pepper is here

While the earliest record of sales of salt comes from the 1920s, Sainsbury’s didn’t start selling their own label branded salt until the 1950s, in a classic blue and white design.

The range expanded in the 1960s to include boxes, bags and tubes.

In 1967, they introduced the iconic conical packet.

In the 1980s the packaging got a makeover and changed from blue and white to red and white.

Pepper also made an appearance in the 1920s price lists, but the earliest example of pepper packaging we have in the collection comes from the Second World War. This example shows the half labels used in WW2 to conserve paper supplies.

The archive has an example of the pared back packaging designs, implemented by Leonard Beaumont in the 1950s.

By the 1960s pepper had been incorporated in the growing spices range and adopted the same design style as other herbs and spices.

In the 1980s pepper was once again included in the redesign of the spices range, this time to include illustrations of foliage.

Finally in the 1990s the pepper packaging was redesigned to reflect the 90s country style kitchen aesthetic.
