Image of Thoroughgood's branch in Martineau Street, Birmingham. This was one of the branches of the Thoroughgood's chain taken over by Sainsbury's in 1936 - however according to 'JS Journal' March-April 1966 (page 7) "trading went on for a week or two" only after it was taken over as it was a "narrow shop (about eight or nine feet wide) and so far below standard that we [Sainsbury's] closed it". This appears to be one of the photographs taken by Mr F.R. Parker in 1936 as a record of the Thoroughgood's branches when they were taken over by Sainsbury's (see 'JS Journal' February 1961 page 26, 'JS Journal' January 1961 page 21, and images of Thoroughgood's branches in other branch files).
