On 9 March 1997 J Sainsbury plc transferred to a new wholly owned subsidary named Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd in order to place the legal structure in line with the management structure, providing greater business focus by allowing the supermarket business to concentrate on operational activities. Trading continued, however, under J Sainsbury's and Sainsbury's Supermarkets.
