Video to promote the proposed SavaCentre store at Hedge End near Southampton and Eastleigh in Hampshire. It shows the benefits a SavaCentre store would offer to customers and the local area. The video was probably produced for public relations purposes to encourage support for the development of the store within the local community. It could have perhaps been shown at a public exhibition or to community groups.

The plans at the time this video was created was for a SavaCentre hypermarket on a site adjacent to the M27 and A334 in Hedge End. At the time the video was created SavaCentre was jointly owned by Sainsbury’s and British Home Stores (BHS). However after Marks & Spencer had received planning consent on an adjoining site, it was later decided to build instead a joint development of a large Sainsbury’s supermarket and a Marks & Spencer department store with a customer restaurant linking the two stores. The joint development which was actually built had a different design from the design shown in this video.

The video discusses: the proposed store designed by Foster and Partners architects; the company; shopping at Savacentre and the products available; jobs at Savacentre stores; value for money prices; the customer restaurant; concessions; the growing local area; road access to the site; landscaping; and the site.

The video includes footage of: the proposed site; model of the proposed store; Calcot (Reading) store exterior; store interior; clothing department; non-food displays; food displays; staff at work around the store and behind the scenes; checkouts; customer restaurant; concessions (Post Office, Lloyds Bank, newsagent, Sharp Chemists, Abbey National); recent developments in the area; Eastleigh town centre; design drawings; products on sale. Vox-pop interviews with customers and brief interviews with managers are also included. The interviews and store interior footage are probably from Calcot store.
