Video for Homebase staff which provides an overview of the company’s performance and developments in the company during the financial year 1991/92. Presented by Selina Scott [television newsreader] filmed at Homebase’s Richmond store. Also titled as “Year End Report to Staff, 1992” on opening titles.

1. Opening titles, includes footage of store exteriors and interiors, and the management conference.

2. Introduction by Selina Scott including clip of Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover at the management conference praising Homebase’s performance. She also looks at Homebase’s store opening programme. Still images of new stores recently opened are included: Crawley, Chelmsford, Blackheath, Oxford, Tunbridge Wells, Southampton, Richmond, and Portsmouth.

3. Interview with Bill Williams (Retail Director). Discusses: the store opening programme; re-fits of existing stores; extended ‘Extra Choice’ service; new garden canopies to be introduced at more stores; answer to question on how safe Homebase is in the competitive DIY market; and his thoughts on the outlook for the company. Footage is included of: ‘Best Buys’ point of sale advertising and lighting department in a store.

4. Interview with Peter Collard (Scanning Manager) about the introduction of barcode scanning – first at Chichester store. Footage is included of: Chichester store exterior (still image); barcode scanning at checkout.

5. Interview with Martin Sargeant (Buying Director) about products. Discusses: new garden buildings (sheds, greenhouses, conservatories etc) initiative at Waltham Cross; new own-label products introduced; question about DIY price war and reaction to competitors. Footage is included of garden buildings display at Waltham Cross store; competitor stores (still image); advertisements (still images).

6. Interview with Gordon Lambert (Distribution Manager) about the new Brackmills Depot and why it is needed. Footage is included of: Brackmills Depot exterior; one of the existing depots; lorries at a depot; employee checking stock arrived at a store; interior of Brackmills depot (currently empty).

7. Interview with Dino Adriano (Chairman and Managing Director) about the company’s financial results; the importance of the Spend & Save loyalty card; law on Sunday trading and an upcoming European court decision; and how they should focus on growing sales in the year ahead 1992/93. Footage is included of: Dino Adriano inside Richmond store with Selina Scott; Spend & Save cards being issued and used; a special preview opening event for Spend & Save cardholders at the new Southampton store (still images); a store with customers and staff.
