Cutting looking back at an issue of the Grocers' Gazette on 9 December 1899 about how Mr J. Sainsbury had remitted 5036 shillings to the Daily Telegraph soldiers, widows and orphans fund. This was the proceeds of collections at his shops. For every shilling subscribed, Mr Sainsbury added sixpence.
