Video relating to the planning and development of new supermarkets. Nine Elms store in London is used as the main example. The video seems to have been made to address concerns by planners and advocate for the development of large modern supermarkets. The presenter talks about how Sainsbury’s shares with planners the problem of balancing local planning policies with what shoppers want.

The presenter discusses: the factors which have led to the development of the modern supermarket such as increasing car use; the requirements of customers eg choice and car parking, and how supermarkets can help meet these requirements; and locations for supermarkets (existing high streets versus other locations). Vox-pop interviews with customers about why they use Nine Elms store are included.

Footage is included of Nine Elms store exterior; store interior with customers and staff (presumably also at Nine Elms); counters (bakery, delicatessen etc); checkouts; Nine Elms car park; various busy town centres (all or mostly in Greater London) including other company’s stores; store exterior in Croydon [Whitgift Centre]; North End Road, Fulham store exterior.

Eight videos which appear to be of production material ('rushes') for the video filmed in 1985 are also included, but these have not been digitized so the content has not been confirmed.

Duration: 11 minutes.
