Television commercial promoting “Sainsbury’s Spring Bonus” special offers.

Features offers on Sainsbury’s Chianti, Persil Automatic, West Country Farmhouse Matured Cheddar, P.G. Tips, Chicken Tonight, Sainsbury’s Premium Bread, Tango, and Walker’s Variety Pack (Paul Gascoigne version only). The light-hearted commercial features the actors playing customers and talking about their purchases in a humorous way “I got…”. It was filmed outside Sainsbury’s New Cross Gate store on 11th April 1996 and was due to air on television from 17th April 1996.

There are two versions of the commercial – one version ('clock number' reference AMV/SAIG364/030) includes England football player Paul Gascoigne and one version (AMV/SAIG363/030) does not include him. The Paul Gascoigne version features him crying after his packet of crisps is stolen (this is a reference to the famous incident at the 1990 World Cup when Gascoigne was emotional after being sent off, and to the Walker’s Crisps commercials which featured footballer Gary Lineker stealing crisps). The version without him instead includes a member of staff pushing trolleys at the end “I got the trolleys”. Both versions are 30 seconds long.

The background music is a theme used in several Sainsbury’s 1990s commercials entitled “Thirty Something”.
