Eight videos containing unedited footage and an edited report probably for use in one or more business television programmes for Sainsbury's staff (mainly store management teams) broadcast on the "SMART" network (Sainsbury's Management and Retail Television) sometime around May 1997. The Archive does not appear to have digitized recordings of any programmes broadcast during this time to confirm exactly how the footage was used, although it seems that the programme(s) related to the performance of Sainsbury’s supermarket business and its subsidiaries during the financial year that had just ended and plans for the new year.
Contents (in order they appear to have been filmed):
- Unedited footage relating to Savacentre, including interview with Savacentre chairman Ian Coull and footage of Sydenham Savacentre store.
- Unedited footage relating to Homebase, including interview with chairman of Homebase and Shaw’s David Bremner about both companies and footage of Kensington Homebase store.
- Unedited footage and edited video relating to Sainsbury's, including interview with chief executive Dino Adriano and footage of Clapham store.
- Unedited interview with retail director Robin Whitbread. The label suggests it was filmed at New Cross store.
- Unedited "pieces to camera" by regional directors Colin Etheridge (South Eastern regional director), Bernard Willis (Central and Western regional director), Graham Naylor (South Western regional director) and Rodney Wooliscroft (Northern regional director). These appear to have been intended as regional inserts broadcast only in the relevant region.
