Recording of "It's the Business" programme for Sainsbury's staff (mainly store management teams). "It's the Business" was the anchor business television programme on the "SMART" network (Sainsbury's Management and Retail Television). This programme was broadcast live on 3 March 1998 by satellite to Sainsbury's stores, depots and offices. It was presented by John Howard in the studio, joined live by Bill Williams (Deputy Retail Director) at Winterstoke Road, Bristol store.

1. Introduction by presenter.
2. Interview with Bill Williams. Discusses availability (stock being available in stores) and promotion of prices - ‘key value items’.
3. Recorded interview with Neil Curry (SBC Warburg) on talk about mergers in the retail industry.
4. Report on the ‘Stockwise’ initiative to reduce stock loss (e.g. stock being accidentally damaged, or becoming out-of-date) with Mike Goodman (Senior Manager, Stockwise). Interviews with staff at a store and Kevin Keaney (Store Manager, Bagshot Road) are also included. Footage is included of: clip of ‘Stockwise’ video; staff watching the video; a depot with staff moving goods; moving items from store warehouse; employee using scanner to check goods.
5. Interview with Bill Williams about ‘Stockwise’ and refit of Winterstoke Road store in Bristol – the first of a series of pilot re-fits.
6. Report about Sainsbury’s Pet Club (club for customers owning pets) with Karen Penney (Head of Relationship Marketing) and other relationship marketing initiatives (0 to 5 Club and Sainsbury’s Rewards).
7. Report about Sainsbury’s Pictures for Schools scheme [which gave free prints of pictures to schools] winning the Hollis sponsorship award with Marah Winn Moon (Community Affairs Manager).
8. Report about product quality monitors and the influence of these on the development of the Taste the Difference range with Bob Cooper (Board Director, Trading) and Peter Foster (Senior Manager, Market Research). Discusses how ‘product quality monitors’ (PQM) consumer surveys have helped improve quality of products.
9. Report about sponsorship of the England team in the World Cup with Jayne Constantinis [television presenter] and Kevin McCarten (Marketing Director). Filmed at the press launch at Cromwell Road store. Footage of the press launch with England footballer Graeme Le Saux is included [see LSA/8850 for unedited footage]. Discusses how it will help promote Sainsbury’s and will involve staff and customers.
10. Interview with Bill Williams including phone-in calls from staff. Discusses opening of Telford store; England football team sponsorship; customers incorrectly using self-scanning handsets for Multibuys; guidelines for dressing smaller stores; deliveries being damaged.
11. Final comments by presenter.
