Sterling silver cup with an engraved inscription, 'SECTION SALES COMPETITION Trophy Presented by the Directors of J. SAINSBURY, Ltd 1948'. The cup features hallmarks indicating that it was made in Sheffield in 1929 by a company with the maker's mark, 'J.D & S'.

Two geometric handles are attached to the wide, shallow bowl of the cup. The cup has a short stem with three collars and a wide circular base.

The cup has been mounted on a separate black two-tier turned wooden stand. Eight shield-shaped silver plates, each engraved with the date and the names of the winning branch or branches and area supervisor, are pinned to the upper tier.

The cup is held in a custom-made black wooden box with a hinged lid and green felt lining. There are inscriptions on the lid of the box, including details of the location in which it was stored, 'J. SAINSBURY Stamford House, Blackfriars, S.E.1. Mr Alan's Office'. The box also features an iron clasp with a partial red paper tag suspended from it.
