Sterling silver cup with an engraved inscription, 'SALES COMPETITION TROPHY Presented by the Directors of J. SAINSBURY, LTD. 1950'. A further inscription on the other side of the bowl is barely visible, but includes the phrase, 'PRESENTED TO'. The cup features stamped hallmarks and inscriptions indicating that it was made in Birmingham in 1905 by Elkington & Co.

The wide, shallow bowl has two scroll-shaped handles. A horizontal band of decoration encircles the bowl beneath the inscriptions. The cup has no stem, just a wide circular foot.

The cup has been mounted on a separate black two-tier turned wooden stand. Six shield-shaped silver plates are pinned to the upper tier; each is engraved with the name of the winning branch, the name of the area supervisor responsible for the branch, and the date of victory.

The cup is held in a custom-made wooden box with a hinged lid and green felt lining. There are several inscriptions on the lid of the box, including details of the location in which it was stored, 'J. SAINSBURY STAMFORD HOUSE BLACKFRIARS Mr Alan's Office'. The box also features two iron handles and an iron clasp with a red paper tag suspended from it.
