Sterling silver cup with an engraved inscription, 'SALES COMPETITION TROPHY Presented by the Directors of J. SAINSBURY, Ltd. 1950'. The cup features a stamped hallmark indicating that it was made in London in 1896.

The wide, shallow bowl has two ring-shaped handles attached to two epaulette-style rim attachments. An applied horizontal band of decoration encircles the bowl below the handles and vertical strips of applied decoration extend from the base up the side of the bowl. The terminals of the strips feature scroll and palmette motifs. The cup has no stem, just a wide circular base.

The cup has been mounted on a separate black two-tier turned wooden stand. Seven shield-shaped silver plates are pinned to the upper tier; each is engraved with the name of the winning branch, the name of the area supervisor responsible for the branch, and the date of victory.

The cup is held in a custom-made wooden box with a hinged lid and sections of green felt lining. There are several inscriptions on the lid of the box, including details of the location in which it was stored, 'J. SAINSBURY STAMFORD HOUSE BLACKFRIARS Mr Alan's Office'. The box also features two iron handles and an iron clasp with a partial paper tag suspended from it.
